FEMA releases earthquake safety information

Senior Center News
The local Hardin Senior Center is the place to be on these hot summer days. Our facility provides air conditioned comfort, good food, good company and a pleasant atmosphere. Come to the senior center and help support us by showing up.

Big Horn County had this wonderful facility built in 2011 with mineral royalty funds and specifically for our senior citizens. We need your presence to continue our success. We are open from 8 a.m. to 4 p.m. Monday through Friday. The phone number is (406) 665-2581.

The recent earthquake experienced by central Montana was in an unmapped fault area, according to geographical data reporting. FEMA (Federal Emergency Management Agency) has the following information on “Earthquake Safety for Homeowners.”

“Before an earthquake, it is important for individuals, families, organizations and communities to identify their risk, make a plan, create a disaster kit, and remove, relocate or secure anything that can: fall and hurt someone, block an exit,  start a fire or, require a lengthy or costly clean-up.

“During an earthquake, drop to the ground, take cover by getting under a sturdy table or other piece of furniture, and hold on until the shaking stops. If there isn’t a table or desk near you, cover your face and head with your arms and crouch in an inside corner of the building.

“Do not run out of the building during the shaking as objects may be falling off the building and cause serious injuries or death.

“After an earthquake, you should safely evacuate. Aftershocks can happen. These additional shaking events can be strong enough to do additional damage to already weakened structures and can occur in the first hours, days, weeks or even months after the main earthquake. Your chimney should be inspected for unnoticed damage that could lead to fires. Also, check for gas, electrical, sewer and water line damage to avoid fire and hazardous leaks. These inspections should be done by a professional.

Coming up at the senior Center is the birthday dinner on Wednesday, July 19. The Seniors Association has a 50-50 raffle as a fundraiser. Bingo is played each Tuesday and is sponsored by Little Horn State Bank, along with a blackout bingo on the second and fourth Tuesday.
