National Park Service

The remains of a military encampment, Fort C.F. Smith, sit near present-day Fort Smith. The site was established on a bluff 500 yards from the Bighorn River and two miles from Bighorn Canyon on Aug. 12, 1866 to protect Bozeman Trail travelers from Sioux warriors.

Bighorn Canyon to present programs celebrating the National Park Service’s 100th and Fort Smith’s 150th anniversaries

In addition to campground programming, Bighorn Canyon will be presenting programs that celebrate the National Park Service’s 100th anniversary and the building of Fort Smith’s 150th anniversary.
