Mary “Babe” Morrison Carpenter, 90, of Hardin went home to be with the Lord on Jan. 30, 2018. She was ushered into Heaven as her daughters and granddaughters sang, “God is Good, God is Great.”
Baaapa’alikshi Xiassaash (“Well Known Garden,” in reference to The Garden of Eden) was born in St. Xavier on March 7, 1927 to Allie Morrison and Marcia Young Curlew. She grew up in the Black Lodge area. Mary married the love of her life Harold Carpenter Sr. in 1946 and they made their home in Lodge Grass. Babe, as all affectionately knew her, worked alongside her husband in the ministry. She was a pastor/evangelist’s wife, and traveled extensively throughout the United States and Canada spreading the gospel with her husband.
A very special woman of God took her journey with Jesus into glory! Mom always will be loved and remembered for all she has done to encourage and support the ministry. Her contribution, dedication and devotion to the body of Christ are the prime example of how we should and shall live our lives for Jesus. Mom was the matriarch of the Carpenter/Morrison family. She truly was the heart of the family and will be dearly missed. Rest in peace, Mom. Her faith in God was evident in all that she did, a trait she passed on to her children and grandchildren.
She is preceded in death by her husband Harold Sr.; parents Allie (Marcia) Morrison; children Faith, Harold, James, Tabitha “Dorcus” and Harold “Cowboy” Carpenter Jr.; grandchildren Toddy and Alan Old Elk; great-grandchild Tristan’s baby; brothers George, Tom, Alvin and Art Morrison; and sisters Evelyn Old Elk, Maude Yarlott, Ethel Not Afraid, Lorraine Williamson and Gloria Medicine Crow.
Survivors include her children Melissa (Sonny) Falls Down, Tommy (Mildred) Carpenter, Pinky (Gary) Bird, Linda “Carpenter” (Gary) Howey, Gloria (Porgey) Old Elk, Almeda (Dean) Good Luck, Sandra (Bobby) Stops, Kathleen “Sweetheart” Carpenter, Tara (CJ) Stewart, TaTah Stewart, Chesney Bird and her “Baby” Tasha Carpenter; sister Caroline Morrison; adopted children Rod and Faye North Peigan, Roy (Honey) Wolf Tail, Jeff North Peigan, Arlene (Campbell) Eagle Child, Melissa James, Jeff (Connie) Guillory, Marie Soux, June Green, Bernice (Alex) Hunt, Phyllis (Fred) Bull Chief, Connie (Bruce) Russell, Francis (Linda) Chief Calf, Tina (Conrad) Alden, LaVern (Tronson) Big Hair, Larry (Jackie) Blacksimth, Catherine Sweet Grass, Garnett Watson, Francine Morrison, Elaine Stops, Julia Wolfe, Gwen Falls Down and Titus Takes Gun; 33 grandchildren; 71 great-grandchildren; and two great-great-grandchildren. Her grandchildren affectionately called her Goppie, a name given to her by Tasha, later they realized it was the Agape Love spoken of in the Bible.
She also is survived by her special friends of many years Violet Enick and Joan Swallow; and her extended family including the Morrison, Goes Ahead, Alden, Hugs, Turns Plenty, Medicine Horse, Humphrey, Bear Cloud, Gardner, Other Medicine, Pretty Paint, White Clay, White Fox, Old Horn, Iron and the Sarah Stewart families.
The family would like to send a special thank you to the staff of Heritage Acres – special thanks to LuAnn, Julie, Shasta, Kelcey, Andrea, Chris and Nicole. We also would like to thank Terry and Punki Bullis.
Please bear with us in our time of grief; we may have forgotten some family members. Our mom “Babe” was blessed with a large and extended family. We appreciate the love, support and prayers.
