On Saturday, Aug. 26, 2017, John D. Mehling passed away peacefully.
John, affectionately known as “Sonny,” was born Dec. 15, 1934 to John and Esther Mehling, the first of four children. He had fond memories of riding horses to and from school. He began farming at an early age.
On Nov. 27, 1955, he married the love of his life Darlene Seader, and they were blessed with four children: Johnny Lee, Mark, Jolene and Kellie.
John and his brother Bob began Mehling Brothers Farm Ranch Operation in North Valley and Pine Ridge. Besides working together, they won the NRCA team roping championship in 1964. John was a champion chariot racer and an accomplished horseman. The arena at the house was busy several nights a week with his kids and many friends team roping.
In 1982, John and Darlene moved closer to Hardin. He enjoyed many years golfing, rebuilding antique Allis Chalmers tractors and spending time with his children and grandchildren.
Sunny’s Greenhouse became his next project. He and Darlene spent many years growing plants and cultivating friendships with their many customers.
John is preceded in death by his parents, brother Bob, sister Beverly, son Mark and grandson Weston Mehling.
Left to commemorate his life are his wife Darlene; children Johnny Lee (Beth) Mehling, Jolene (Joe) Kuntz and Kellie (Scott) Ohmstede; sister Sharon Ragland; and beloved grandchildren, great-grandchildren, nieces and nephews, friends and neighbors.

Funeral services were held Aug. 30,, 2017 at the E&R Church. Interment followed at the Fairview Cemetery. Bullis Mortuary was entrusted with arrangements.
