Verrol Jessie Ann (Fowler) Hastings passed away on July 14, 2017 at Franciscan Hospice House in University Place, Wash. She was 79.
Jessie was born Feb. 17, 1938 in Jonesboro, Ark. (formerly Nettleton, Ark.) to Leon Fred and Vela Ann Fowler.
Jessie attended school in Toledo, Wash. At 19, she moved to Hardin, where she enjoyed working at a local bakery. She moved to California, where she met and married Orville (Gene) Haven Hastings in 1960. They had three children: Sharlyn (Shari) in 1961, Steven in 1962 and Keith in 1966.
After Steven’s birth, they all relocated to Toledo, where they lived until the mid-1980s. In 1994, Jessie moved back to Hardin to live closer to her sisters.
She was a dedicated mother who eagerly taught her children useful life skills, with a passion to raise good kids. She also worked at home caring for other children for many years.
Jessie was a self-taught piano player who played by ear and loved music, especially country western and old gospel hymns. She had the magical skill of being able to listen to someone hum a few bars of a song and she could start right in playing it. She had a soft heart toward animals and appreciated the beauty of nature, with a special affection for flowers of many kinds.
Jessie is survived by her three children, Sharlyn and husband Jim Harding, Steven and wife Rosario, and Keith and wife Frances; siblings Veta and husband Richard Taylor, Viola Esther, and Larry Fowler and wife Karla; grandchildren Marla, Jasmine, Alyssa, Timothy, Cassandra, Adam, Matthew and Samantha; and many cousins, nieces and nephews.
She was preceded in death by her parents; sisters Mary Miller, Martha Boggess, Violet Morris and Margie Buckingham; and brother Virgil Fowler.
A graveside memorial service will be held at 2 p.m. on Saturday, Sept. 23, 2017 at Fir Lawn Cemetery, 351 N. 5th St., in Toledo, Wash. All are welcome.
